Intervista a Betty Williams sul concetto di sicurezza a livello mondiale e sicurezza spirituale. Illustrazione della sua esperienza personale e l’esempio del Costarica come modello di pace.

Betty Williams is 1976 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, founder of the Northern Ireland Peace Movement (later renamed Community of Peace People).Williams is a Patron for the International Peace Foundation in Vienna.

Interviewing Betty Williams on the concept of security in the world and spiritual security. An explanation of her personal experience and the example of Costa Rica as a model for peace. 

Il mondo intero si affida a eserciti, forze di polizia per avere più sicurezza e la verità è che tutto questo non servirà ad aumentare la sicurezza. Un classico esempio di questa situazione è il Costarica, paese che non ha un esercito e la cui forza di polizia deve cambiare ogni 4 anni, il Costarica non viene attaccato. Penso che il messaggio che traiamo da questa situazione sia: “Perchè attaccare chi non si può difendere?” Non, ha senso farlo!

È solo la mia opinione ma ho vissuto situazioni in cui sapevo non esserci alcuna sicurezza ;avrei potuto essere colpita da una bomba mentre camminavo per strada quindi, la sicurezza, la parola sicurezza per me non esiste. Si può essere sicuri a livello individuale, a livello mentale come essere umano.

The whole world is looking for armies, police, everything to make them secure and the truth is that it doesn’t make them any more secure. One classic example of that is Costarica, it doesn’t have an army, it has a police force that has to change every four years and they are not attacked. And I think the thing that comes out of that from here is why attack something that can’t defend? There’s no sense in that!

This is only my belief but then I’ve lived through a situation in which I knew there was no security; I could have walked out and being caught by a bomb so you know, security, the word security for me doesn’t exist.You can be secure within yourself, you know security human being within your mind.

Viaggio per il mondo per la causa dei bambini e visito aree che non potremmo distinguere dal resto del mondo per essere particolarmente non secure, qui posso incontrare le famiglie, mangiare con loro e vedere che i bambini sono sicuri perchè la loro famiglia è unita e quindi al suo interno sono sicuri ma se parliamo di eserciti, marina ed aviazione penso che tutto questo non farà del mondo un posto migliore quindi come possiamo chiamarla sicurezza? È morte e distruzione non è vita e creazione quindi per me il concetto di sicurezza è da intendersi probabilmente a livello individuale senza volere anche la sicurezza altrui in modo tale da essere certi di non venire uccisi. In parte si intendo sicurezza spirituale.

I know I have travelled the world on behalf of children and I go to areas we couldn’t call deemed by the rest of the world to be terribly insecure and I can meet the families and go and eat with them and see children in security because the family is a union and they are secure within themselves but when we are talking about armies, navies and air forces in my opinion they are not going to make the world any better so how can that be security? Because it’s death and destruction it’s not life and creation so security to me means probably security within yourself and not looking for others’ too to ensure that you won’t be killed. So partly yes, spiritual security.
